June is the start of summer in Korea. The first half of the month is often warm and pleasant, and the second half brings humidity and the start of the rainy season. Prices are still reasonable before the big summer holidays. Here is what to expect.
What the weather is like
Early June in Seoul is warm and usually sunny, with long days. As the month goes on it gets hotter and more humid. The rainy season, called jangma, usually reaches Jeju and the south in mid to late June and Seoul towards the end of the month. It does not rain all day every day, but there can be heavy downpours. See our seasons and weather guide.
What to pack
- Light, breathable clothes and a thin layer for strong air conditioning.
- A compact umbrella or light rain jacket. Convenience stores sell cheap umbrellas if you get caught out.
- Sandals or quick-drying shoes for rainy days.
- Sunscreen and insect repellent.
Things to do in June
Early summer by the sea
Busan's beaches begin opening for swimming in early summer, with lifeguards and full facilities by July. Evenings on the sand at Haeundae or Gwangalli are lovely in June. See our Busan guide.
Hydrangeas on Jeju
From mid June, hydrangeas bloom along Jeju's roads and temple gardens, a favourite photo spot before the summer crowds. See our Jeju itinerary.
Evenings outside
Long, warm evenings are perfect for the Han River parks, night markets and rooftop views. Our Seoul night views guide has ideas.
Plans for rainy days
Keep a few indoor options ready: museums, the big malls and underground shopping centres, cafés, a Korean bathhouse (see our jjimjilbang guide) or a Korean barbecue dinner (see our Korean BBQ guide).
Holidays and dates
- 6 June, Memorial Day: a public holiday honouring those who died for the country. It is a day of remembrance, not celebration.
- School summer holidays start in July, so June is quieter than July and August.
