July is summer in full: the first half of the month is usually rainy, the second half hot and humid. It is beach season and holiday season in Korea, with lively festivals and long evenings outside. With the right plans, it is a fun month to visit.
What the weather is like
The rainy season, jangma, usually continues into the second half of July, with heavy showers and sticky air. Once it ends, days in Seoul are often above 30°C and very humid, and nights stay warm. Typhoons can occasionally bring a day or two of storms, especially later in the summer. Keep an eye on the forecast and the Korea Meteorological Administration's warnings. See our seasons and weather guide.
What to pack
- Light, breathable clothes; you may want to change your shirt during the day.
- A small umbrella for both rain and sun.
- Sunscreen, a hat and a refillable water bottle.
- A thin layer for cold trains, cafés and cinemas.
- Swimwear for beaches, water parks and hotel pools.
Things to do in July
Beaches
Busan's beaches are fully open, with lifeguards, parasols and night-time crowds. Haeundae is the famous one; Gwangalli has the bridge view. Jeju's beaches are clearer and calmer. See our Busan guide and Jeju guide.
Summer festivals
The Boryeong Mud Festival on the west coast, usually held in July, is one of the most popular events with foreign visitors: mud slides, mud wrestling and a lot of laughter. Many beach towns hold summer festivals and fireworks too. Check our festival calendar for dates.
Staying cool in the city
Plan outdoor sightseeing for the early morning and evening, and spend the hottest hours indoors: museums, malls, cafés and the underground shopping streets. Evenings by the Han River are pleasant, and night markets come alive. Our Seoul night views guide has ideas.
Summer food
Try naengmyeon (cold noodles), bingsu (shaved ice with toppings) and samgyetang (chicken soup with ginseng), which Koreans traditionally eat on the hottest days to keep their strength up.
Holidays and busy dates
- 17 July, Constitution Day: a public holiday in 2027 (with a substitute day on Monday 19 July).
- Late July to mid August is the peak domestic holiday season. Beach hotels and KTX trains to the coast sell out, so book early.
