April is spring at its prettiest in Korea. Cherry blossoms sweep north across the country, the hills turn pale green, and the long, cold winter is finally over. It is also one of the busiest months for visitors, so a little planning goes a long way. Here is what to expect.
What the weather is like
In Seoul, April afternoons are usually mild and pleasant, while mornings and evenings are still cool, especially early in the month. By late April the days can feel warm. It is a fairly dry month with plenty of sunshine. Busan and Jeju are a little warmer; the mountains are cooler. The main spoiler is air quality: spring is the season for fine dust and yellow dust, and some days are hazy. Check an air-quality app and carry a mask. Our seasons and weather guide explains more.
What to pack
- Layers: a T-shirt, a light sweater and a jacket you can take off in the afternoon.
- Comfortable shoes for long walks under the blossoms.
- A few KF94 masks for dusty days.
- Sunglasses and a small umbrella for the odd spring shower.

Things to do in April
Cherry blossoms
Blossoms reach the south coast and Jeju first, at the end of March, and Seoul usually in early to mid April. They last only about a week in any one place, so stay flexible. In Seoul, favourites include the cherry tree avenue behind the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seokchon Lake by Lotte World Tower and the riverside paths along the Han. Gyeongju, with blossoms around its old tombs and lake, is magical. Forecasts come out in February; see our cherry blossom guide.
Spring festivals
Many towns hold blossom and flower festivals in April, from cherry blossoms to azaleas and yellow canola fields on Jeju. Our festival calendar lists this year's dates.
Palaces, hikes and picnics
Mild weather makes April perfect for palaces, hanok villages and easy hikes. Koreans love a picnic by the Han River, often with fried chicken delivered to the riverbank. See our 3-day Seoul itinerary.
Crowds and costs
- Blossom weekends are packed. Visit famous spots early in the morning or on weekdays.
- Book early. Hotels in Seoul, Gyeongju and Jinhae fill up during peak blossom week.
- No public holidays fall in April, so trains are easier to book than in May.
