May is often the most comfortable month in Korea: warm and sunny, green everywhere, and not yet humid. It is also a month of holidays, including Buddha's Birthday with its beautiful lantern displays. Here is how to make the most of it.

What the weather is like

Days in Seoul are warm and bright, and evenings are mild enough to sit outside. Late May can already feel like early summer. It is usually dry before the rainy season arrives in late June. Fine dust can still appear on some days, especially early in the month. See our seasons and weather guide.

What to pack

Things to do in May

Buddha's Birthday and the Lotus Lantern Festival

Buddha's Birthday falls on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month; in 2027 it is on 13 May. In the weeks before, temples hang thousands of colourful lanterns. In Seoul, the Lotus Lantern Festival (Yeondeunghoe) around Jogyesa temple and Insadong usually includes a huge lantern parade on a weekend before the day. On the day itself, many temples welcome visitors and some serve a free bowl of bibimbap. Check our festival calendar for this year's dates.

Roses and green hills

Roses bloom in late May, with rose festivals in several Seoul parks. It is also a lovely month for hiking, cycling along the Han River and day trips to the countryside.

Jeju and the coast

Jeju is green and pleasant in May, before the summer crowds; see our Jeju itinerary. Busan's beaches are good for walking, though the sea is still cool for swimming. See our Busan guide.
