Seoul is a city to see after dark. Mountains run right through it, so you can climb a short way above the lights for free, and the Han River and its bridges glow all evening. Here are the best places to see the city at night, from free walks to paid observatories, and how to time your visit.
N Seoul Tower and Namsan
The tower on Namsan is the classic view: the whole city spread out around you, with the mountains on the horizon. You can enjoy most of it for free from the terraces at the foot of the tower, or pay for the observatory at the top. Walk up from Myeongdong, take the Namsan cable car, or ride a local bus up the mountain. Come about half an hour before sunset to see the city in daylight, at dusk and lit up. Cable car and observatory times change with the season, so check them on the day.
Naksan Park and the old city wall
A quieter, free alternative. From Hyehwa Station (Line 4) it is an easy uphill walk through the Ihwa mural village area to Naksan Park, where the stone city wall runs along the ridge. Walk along the wall after dark: the lit wall in front and the city behind it make one of Seoul's most beautiful night scenes.
Seoul Sky at Lotte World Tower
The observatory at the top of Lotte World Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the world, gives a view straight down onto the Han River and Jamsil. It is the most expensive option and can be busy at sunset, but the view on a clear night is remarkable. Booking online in advance is often cheaper.
The Han River at night
The river is where locals go on warm evenings. Yeouido and Banpo Hangang Parks are easy to reach by subway, with wide lawns, food trucks in season and views of the lit bridges. The Banpo Bridge fountain runs only in the warmer months, roughly April to October, with several short shows each evening. A river cruise from Yeouido is another way to see the lights.
In the city centre
- Cheonggyecheon: the stream below street level is lit after dark and is an easy, free walk from Gwanghwamun. See our first evening in Seoul guide.
- Dongdaemun Design Plaza: the curving building glows at night, and the fashion malls around it stay open late.
- Bukaksan Skyway and Palgakjeong: a winding road up the mountain behind the palaces, with a pavilion looking over the city. It is easiest by taxi or a local bus from Gyeongbokgung.
Tips for a night out with a view
- Check the air: on hazy or fine-dust days, distant views disappear. Use an air quality app and go on a clear night.
- Dress warmly: hilltops are windy, and in winter the cold bites after dark.
- Getting back: the subway runs until around midnight. Taxis are easy to book with Kakao T; see our taxi app guide.
- Combine it: pair Namsan with dinner in Myeongdong, or Naksan Park with a walk through Daehangno's theatres and cafés.
