Korea’s Express and Intercity Buses: A Simple Guide

By Jungsuk Kim, Korea Plainly · Published

Learn the difference between express and intercity buses in Korea, where to book tickets, how to find your platform, and what to expect on the journey.

Long-distance coach waiting at a Korean bus terminal

Long-distance buses are a comfortable way to travel between Korean cities, including places that do not have a convenient train connection. The main thing to know is that Korea has two types: express buses, called 고속버스 (gosok beoseu), and intercity buses, called 시외버스 (si-oe beoseu). The distinction is useful, but it does not always tell you which bus is best for your trip. Compare both before booking.

Express or intercity: which should you choose?

Express buses usually run between major cities on longer routes, while intercity buses also serve smaller towns and regional stops. In practice, the networks can overlap. For example, buses from Seoul to Busan run from the Express Bus Terminal, while other routes to the same region may leave from a different terminal. For Sokcho, Seoul has both a Sokcho Express Bus Terminal service from the Express Bus Terminal and intercity services from other terminals. Choose by destination, departure time and terminal—not just by bus type.

Useful Korean words on booking screens include 출발 (chulbal) for departure, 도착 (dochak) for arrival, and 편도 (pyeondo) for one way. Check that the destination name and terminal match your plans; two terminals in the same city may be far apart.

Where to catch a bus in Seoul

Seoul has several major bus terminals, so confirm the departure point before leaving your hotel. The Seoul Express Bus Terminal is in Banpo, Seocho District, above Express Bus Terminal Station, served by subway Lines 3, 7 and 9. It handles many express routes, including services to Busan. The connected Central City complex is used for many routes toward the southwest, including Jeonju.

Seoul Nambu Terminal, at Nambu Terminal Station on Line 3, has many services to destinations south of Seoul. Dong Seoul Bus Terminal is beside Gangbyeon Station on Line 2 and serves routes to places including Sokcho. These names matter in a taxi app: entering just “Seoul bus terminal” can take you to the wrong one.

How to find routes and buy tickets

For express buses, search KOBUS at kobus.co.kr. For intercity routes, try txbus.t-money.co.kr or bustago.or.kr. Coverage can vary, so if a route does not appear on one site, search the others. You can also buy tickets at the terminal, using a staffed counter or a ticket machine where available. Some machines offer an English option.

Enter the exact departure and arrival terminals, then choose a date and seat. Common service labels include 일반 (ilban), a standard bus, and 우등 (udeung), a roomier premium coach with fewer seats. Some routes also offer 프리미엄 (premium) coaches. Your seat is usually assigned, so keep the ticket or booking details handy. If you book online, follow the instructions shown for using a mobile ticket or collecting a ticket at the terminal; the process can differ by service.

For busy travel dates such as Chuseok, Seollal or summer weekends, book as early as your route allows. At the terminal, look for your destination on the departure boards and match it to the departure time and platform. The word 승차홈 (seungcha hom) means boarding platform. Arrive with time to spare, especially at Seoul Express Bus Terminal, where the concourses are large.

At the terminal and on board

Keep your bags with you until you reach the coach. Larger suitcases go in the luggage compartment under the bus; smaller bags can stay at your seat. Check the destination sign on the coach before loading a suitcase, particularly if several buses are lined up at the platform. Save your seat number and ticket until the journey ends.

Long-distance buses may stop at a highway service area, or 휴게소 (hyugeso), on some journeys. These stops are a chance to use the restroom or buy a drink and Korean snacks such as hotteok or packaged kimbap. Listen for the driver’s return-time announcement and remember which bus you boarded; coaches at a busy rest stop can look alike. Do not assume every route makes a rest stop.

Arriving and making the next connection

Check the arrival terminal’s location before you set off. In Busan, the Busan Central Bus Terminal is in Nopo, at the northern end of Metro Line 1, while the Busan Seobu Bus Terminal is at Sasang, near Metro Line 2 and the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail. They serve different parts of the city and are not interchangeable. In Sokcho, the express and intercity terminals are also separate places, so choose the one that best suits your hotel or onward connection.

For the last leg, search the terminal name in Naver Map or KakaoMap and check nearby subway, city-bus or taxi options. A local bus stop may show a route number but not an English destination, so keeping the Korean name of your hotel or next stop on your phone can help. Check current details on Naver Map or the bus company’s official site before travel.

A simple checklist

Bottom line: A little preparation can make your time in Korea much easier. Keep this guide handy and enjoy exploring at your own pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an express bus and an intercity bus?

Express buses usually travel between cities with fewer stops, while intercity buses may stop at additional towns along the way. The distinction and route options can vary, so check the destination and stops shown when choosing a ticket.

How do I make sure I go to the right bus terminal?

Check the terminal name on your ticket or booking details, not just the city name. A city may have more than one bus terminal, and buses to the same destination can leave from different places. Confirm the terminal location before you set off.

Can I buy a bus ticket at the terminal?

Many travelers buy tickets at a terminal counter or ticket machine, though the options can differ by terminal and route. For a busy travel day, check whether advance booking is available. Keep your ticket handy so you can confirm the departure time, gate, and destination.
